Today, we accepted the crown and scepter, beginning our reign over the Land of Procrastination. It is a lovely little place, filled with people hard at work at everything but what they should be doing. There is an entire suburb devoted to people who obsessively check their email every thirty seconds. A small village where nothing can be done until all paper clips are properly sorted by size (and on one street, by color). The major city is packed with individuals who spend their entire day setting up their work envoironment. It is unfortunate that this city is also overrun by evil elves who work throughout the night, displacing coffee cups and rearranging desktops.

This is our land, and we are proud to rule it. We do, however, worry that a stronger, more powerful member of Procrastinator family will displace us. After all, we tried to avoid it all day, but we nibbled on the Apple of Guilt. Yes, it’s true: we somehow ended up doing…work. Don’t get us wrong — we certainly put up a good fight. We even wasted long minutes setting up a spreadsheet, creating helpful formulas, and then formatting header rows. We made the thing far more complex than it needs to be. Then it struck us. We had no excuses left. Not a single unanswered email. Not a soul by the water cooler. Nothing.

Day one of NaNo ended up, despite our best efforts, a success. We actually went above and beyond our quota because we expect we’ll be glued to the television tomorrow night.

In a way, it is amazing how hard we work to avoid something we actually want to do…
