This is a how to article. It’s about the Gap. Long before there was a store by that name, the Gap slipped into the vernacular, worming its way onto TV. Picture this: in the year 1966, news comes from three sources including Walter Cronkite. TV news is sedate, stentorian, ominous. There was a Missile Gap in the Sixties, a Knowledge Gap after Sputnik. On the fashion scene archival evidence suggests that women of the era bore an odd resemblance to David Bowie, not as he appeared then, as much as he does now. Every squeeze of the aerosol can created a Gap in the Ozone layer and that led to the Cuyahoga River catching on fire and the rise of the Burning River News.

To enjoy the Perception Gap we view certain institutions with a kindness born of need. Jack Abramoff, the indicted lobbyist, took Tom Delay on a golfing trip to Scotland. That looks bad, but think about it. Without that congressional junket Scotland’s military ambitions might have grown unchecked. They grab an island in the North Sea, then pour across the border and sack York. Scotland had plans to invade the US, plans to install Sean Connery as Dictator, plans that fell apart when the Scots saw Tom on the back nine at St. Andrews. That junket averted war.

The Gap is generous. It shelters entire industries in the sweet warmth of balmy forecasts, outlooks, projections and budgets. The Gap really loves the publishing business because the business needs love, because without the Gap, publishing would no longer appeal to anyone, not even Rupert. They’d put away their branding irons to allow any old body through the pearly gates into the Magic Kingdom. As surely as Google rises in the west the Gap will soothe the distressed titans of industry, enabling them to unleash shareholder value, ravel back their sleeves of care ignoring reality for one more fiscal year.

Unless the Scots invade. Those guys have hatchets. They know how to fill the Gap.

The Year of Living Dangerously? 2005 can lay no such claim in the halls of the publishing kings. In the book world this was more along the lines of The Year Jose Canseco became Our Greatest Living Writer. Jose, I tip my cap to you and hope that Google engineers will capture your oeuvre now that the steroids have worn off, mine, not yours, for imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I want to be a great writer too.

Juiced was a surprise bestseller. Was it art? It told the truth, a truth that needed telling especially for those pondering careers as major league pitchers, those tortured artistes with mound and resin bag. You don’t have to tell them that the literary headwinds are blowing straight out when a guy steps to the plate bulging in places no bulge had any business bulging, a scrappy little utility man now popping out of his sleeves all muscled up from signing book contracts. Surprise bestseller? Not from sixty feet away; this is the year that book reviewers finally learned how to spit between their teeth.

Sure, this may not be a publishing trend. I can foresee a series here though, Juiced followed by Semi-Juiced, followed by total collapse of the Farm System where young writers have traditionally honed their craft in towns like Visalia, Prince Henry, and Walla-Walla. These aspiring types warm up in the bullpen under the watchful gaze of the Query Letter Coach. She’s all business because she knows that these kids have got one shot at the bigs these days, it’s all or nothing, because the specter of Hollywood’s travails loom large. Wary executives in NYC can only shake their heads at their brethren on the Coast; sure it’s fun to do business from the cockpit of a drophead Lagonda, but films come and go in the blink of an eye, even with Tom Cruise attached, even with trailers running between Metamucil ads stirring the viewers with graphic images of Angelina Jolie eating Visigoths for breakfast. Yet the glimmer of envy stirs wintry hearts; they try putting Patricia Cornwell on TV but she only frightens people, and yet, book people have adopted film speak.

Pitching of course has taken on a whole new meaning; you have the long pitch, the treatment, the synopsis, the marketing summary, and, of course, the elevator pitch. The artist must be prepared at all times, twenty four seven, because the opportunity to deliver art to the masses might arrive at any moment, in a parking lot or a hallway, or God forbid, waiting with a ticket for a complimentary drink. Two feet away from the golden promise of a Bud Lite, some guy wants to know what your book is about. You recognize him…he’s huge, he’s an agent with bicoastal contacts and your mind is blank except for useless fragments of recycled images of Scooter and Judy…pitch to the man!

Steroids…it’s about steroids. Oh yeah, and vampires. And the zeitgeist. Ripped from the headlines…hell, I don’t know, I’m an artist. These drinks are free, aren’t they?

I read somewhere that the holidays were encroaching. That was probably The Wall Street Journal. Encroaching on what? When confronted with conundrums I turn to the Earl. He’s an aspiring writer whose literary career is wobbly at best. For instance, he lost his cool and was dragged across the floor of a train station clinging to a literary agent’s expensive trousers. When the agent tried to shake him loose the Earl offered his manuscript in exchange for letting go. Needless to say that ploy was a total failure. In all the excitement the Earl had forgotten to enclose a SASE.

When he learned that I was guest blogging on Booksquare the Earl ran full page ads demanding equal time. Unfortunately the transit strike intervened. There are no wi-fi stations on the Brooklyn Bridge. However I can quote from his essay ‘Uberagents Love Me’ in the hopes of helping other writers with their travails. The Earl suggests, “when attending a writers conference always seize the opportunity to speak with agents and editors. I make use of a motorized golf cart. While actual collisions with attendees may cause rancor agents and editors are often more receptive as they regain consciousness, a kind of fugue state during which you may be mistaken for a loved one…”

This approach may not be for everyone. Fans in Northern California: the Earl will be appearing at Eddie’s Book Nook on the slopes of Mount Shasta. This is a make up date from last year when the event was snowed out. He’ll be reading from his potboiler Voltaire’s Miasma described by the Wellington Leg Intelligencer as ‘gripping.’ And, yes, all sales are final.

Maybe it’s me or maybe it’s the transit strike, but a wave of news releases from the Big Apple this morning suggest that everyone may be auditioning for A Fine Madness. I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge during the last transit strike and discovered two things: objects along the East River are further away than they appear and two, the streets were filled with Manhattanites asking one another for directions all of which led back to the bridge. The police were on hand to assist Brooklyn residents who were doubled over with laughter. Somewhere in Brooklyn is the Atlantic Avenue Long Island Railroad station. They’re not on strike. They don’t have to be, no one knows where they are.

Executives on the Upper East Side are in good shape because limo drivers are non-union. Thus we have this announcement from Simon & Schuster as swiped from Michael Cader’s Publishers Lunch: to wit, the new biography of Milton S. Hershey features a jacket that resembles a Hershey bar. The candy company is suing asking for an injunction against the cover.

This is not senseless litigation. You see, unbranded readers might attempt to eat the book or melt it with Egyptian cotton for Milo Minderbender s’mores. As Susan Gable pointed out, confusion reigns in our business, although I see an opportunity here. Let them eat books. Partially digested books are non-returnable. Book clubs could form dinner parties and this is a natural for marketing tieins with Costco and Whole Foods. Instead of buyers the wholesalers could employ tasters. A Simon & Schuster Sampler might make a wonderful holiday gift especially for commuters hungry after crossing the Brooklyn Bridge. And Cookbooks? Forget about it. Let’s eat.

Jane Friedman is a smart executive. She runs Harper-Collins, one of the trade houses large enough to represent the book industry as a whole. HC is owned by Rupert Murdoch’s NewsCorp conglomerate, with all the drama and trauma that implies. Ms. Friedman made the comment last summer that she envisions a time when authors are secondary to the brand name imprint, that future book buyers will want to buy a book because Harper Collins is the publisher.

Harlequin is the role model. Everyone knows what a Harlequin title is. Even the casual observer understands that Harlequin has a traditional audience, fans of Romance. A customer may safely purchase a Harlequin Romance because the brand assures them that what they see is what they get. But Harlequin has a dazzling array of imprints that seek to fine-tune its audience appeal. If I were the target audience, I’d be confused. Can’t I just buy a Harlequin?

No. Jane Friedman’s vision of branded buying used to be Harlequin’s sweet spot. One giant is moving away from that ideal while another longs to get there; Coke wants to be Pepsi and they both want to be Gatorade. The varying corporate strategies illustrate this confounding fact about big time publishing: they don’t know who their customers are. They know Barnes & Noble, Borders, Costco and Walmart. Those are four faces of wholesale book buying. Here’s what they want: whatever sold last year. By narrowing the focus to what the big buyers want, major publishers risk alienating the end user, readers. Does this matter? General Motors cooked away its audience thirty years ago and has never regained market share; today its bond rating is junk and its pension liabilities may force the company into bankruptcy. s romantic ideal. James Patterson's latest novel is available on Aisle Nine between the smoked salmon and the motor oil, and as Meatloaf correctly observed, two out of three ain't bad.

Only one thing happened to the publishing business in 2005. Google went public. Lots of pin action in the stock. All the broker dealers will have big bonuses in their Christmas stocking. Sure, two Googlebots left the farm and moved to Elko Nevada, a scandal that hasn’t garnered enough attention. But in terms of market capitalization Google’s equity value surpasses Disney, Time-Warner, and Microsoft. They have six billion in checking and savings. That’s toaster oven territory.

What does it mean? If you’re like me, you’re obsolete. If you’re not like me, there’s hope of course. Bertelsman Group will go public next year. BG owns Random House, but the tail that wags the dog is Group Lambert based in sunny Brussels. They control a chunk of Bertelsman and want to unleash shareholder value. There will be a huge public offering, followed by the inevitable series of beheadings, SEC scrutiny, and down the road a visit from a Corporate Raider who will claim that book publishing is a low growth, no win, nonsensical and unpredictable business. To which I say, what’s your point?

Google will save us. They will cross genre boundaries, a rising tide lifting all boats. Don your 3D glasses. We’ll be reading books at the newly converted Drive-Ins. Big screen, popcorn, plenty of free parking. If we’re lucky, there’ll be midnight screenings of The Blob.
