Did you know that Saturday, May 7, is Free Comic Book Day? We suppose this is only slightly more surprising than discovering this year’s event isn’t the first. Apparently there’s a need to build awareness of the genre. For some reason, we don’t find this reassuring. If there’s one thing it seems that everyone should know about, it’s comic books.

Now if you can’t make it out for your free copy, never fear: business is booming. What with graphic novels and manga and the Fantastic Four about to hit the big screen*, comics will continue to be the big story for the next year. Unless the media gets bored. It’s been known to happen.

What’s the upside to all this comic-mania? Other than books with pictures. That’s such a plus, it should go without saying. No, the big deal, the hot news is that comics are bringing books to an underrrepresented reading populace. Yes, men!

The average reader is a man between 30 and 34 years of age, according to a recent reader survey, he said.

If we were the type, we’d make a comment about men being visual creatures. Naturally, we would never go that low.

* – We believe; it is entirely possible that we dreamed this.
