Shelley — Belated response. A high-quality ebook meets the highest production standards. A low-quality ebook is riddled with conversion/production errors, rendering it difficult for the consumer to enjoy, much less read.

Sad to have missed it!

I’m heading to sxswi in just over a week, which is renowned for being more about the time inbetween sessions and serendipitous meetings than the actual talks themselves. I think it will be more beer than cocktails but still pretty cool I think. Obviously sxsw is a bit different (being much broader than publishing for a start) but when you start exploding the container, then you are overlapping into all kinds of media and general digital awesomeness.

If you’re going to be around there it’d be great to meet. If not, then I’ve been inspired by this post to (try very hard to) do a comprehensive round up of what goes on in relation to publishing so I will send you a link.

But the fact is that I already anticipated the stormfront coming over the horizon about two years ago, and now the next book I am finishing will be published as an e-book first, then a print book. In the last four years since I started publishing my own books I have seen no appreciable increase in sales of the printed books, and about a 2% increase in sales of the ebooks, thanks to my self-education on the conversion process and access to various new selling venues. As more platforms open up and prices are forced down by market pressures, I can only hope that sales will go up. I think it’s safe to say that I will not be trying to approach a traditional publisher in the future since my selling model is already firm and my books are about as unBISAC as they could get. I don’t follow the standards set down by the traditional publishing industry because I have found the process to be byzantine at best. But I am going to look at the metadata push a bit more. Maybe I could translate that into better meta tags on my website, and that would make my site more findable.

But none of what I do will improve my sales until the customer comes looking. And I must compete against Amazon, which means I’m practically invisible. When Amazon loses its luster to the average buyer, I’ll be there.
