At this point, we must ask: is there an agency out there not looking for quality literary fiction and compelling narrative non-fiction? We’re not trying to suggest the market is getting crowded, but, well, it seems like the market is getting crowded. How are authors supposed to make informed decisions as consumers?

Oh, right, by reading lengthy agent interviews. MediaBistro does the work so we don’t have to (being lazy is a virtue, from what we’ve been told). So, while you can guess what the Ann Rittenberg Literary Agency is seeking, you can also learn that Rittenberg and associate Ted Gideonse aren’t looking for books with, and we quote, “busty ladies or Fabio on the cover.” Which is good because pitching an already published book might make for a challenging sales situation. They seem to like the quirky, off-beat sort of literature that makes for fun reading. Also, see previous re: non-fiction. Someday we’ll spend a few minutes really trying to understand that market. Or you can read the interview and work through the process on your own.
