Looking for a reason to lose yourself in the wilderness? Or are you looking for a reason to sit in a comfy lodge while wilderness rages around you? Yes, that’s the option we prefer. Not that camping and such isn’t appealing, but we’re all about creature comforts. For those seeking a writers’ conference in the middle of majestic Yosemite, have we got an event for you the weekend of August 27 – 29, 2004:

Editors, agents to speak at Yosemite Writers Conference

Keynote speaker: Carol Higgins Clark

Twenty-one magazine and book publishing professionals, including best-selling novelist Carol Higgins Clark, will speak to aspiring and published writers at the Yosemite Writers Conference, Aug. 27-29 at Tenaya Lodge. Cost is $275, and Tenaya Lodge is offering a special group rate.

The conference will feature intensives (where writers work on their own material with professionals), one-on-one meetings with editors and agents, as well as workshops on how to write fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, children’s stories and books, science fiction, thrillers and short stories. An unusual feature of the conference will be the appearance of magazine editors from Sunset, Cosmopolitan, Writer’s Digest, ByLine and Glimmer Train.

On the night of Aug. 27, participating editors and agents will present, “The Down and Dirty How-to-pitch-us Panel,” explaining to those attending how to best approach them with material.

Winners of the Yosemite Writers Contest and the 2004 Sheila L. Stephens Scholarship will also be announced.

Writers are traveling from as far away as Virginia, Florida, Kansas, Ohio, Georgia, Mississippi, Bermuda, Thailand and Scotland.

Keynote speaker Carol Higgins Clark is the author of six best-selling Regan Reilly mysteries, Decked, nominated as Best First Novel for both the Agatha and Anthony Awards. With her mother, Mary Higgins Clark, she has co-authored two holiday suspense novels, Deck the Halls, published by Simon & Schuster/Scribner in October 2000, and He Sees You When You’re Sleeping, published by Simon & Schuster/Scribner in October 2001.

Mystery novelist Sheree Petree, thriller novelist Bonnie Hearn Hill, editor/nonfiction author Cindy Wathen, and Hazel Dixon-Cooper, the Cosmopolitan Bedside Astrologer, will also speak.
