They Had Us At Reverent

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston are the new darlings of the literary world. We cannot believe we just typed that sentence, but sure enough, there it is on our screen. And the cats can’t spell. Let us begin again. Pitt and Aniston are acquiring rights to books like it’s going out of style (which is not possible as Hollywood is a town of copycats, and the golden duo does it, the rest will follow like well-tanned sheep). Which leads us to, first, wonder how anyone can say the following with a straight face:

Brad and Jen started Plan B as a little underground company.

Right. However, it appears that Plan B, the little underground production company has goal: reverence. As in adapting material as it’s meant to be adapted:

…Hollywood is becoming more reverent about source material after the failure of films like Chocolat and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin to match the quality of the original books.

In this, we have high hopes. But having worked in the industry far too long (long enough to not even bother raising an eyebrow when Catwoman failed to land on all four paws…they changed Catwoman’s name. How screwed up is that?), we know the rather bizarre pressures placed on writers to meet visions of executives who truly have no clue. And it often shows.
