Our bookclub was feeling mentally deprived when it was established. Someone came up with the brilliant plan to read classics. And so we did. Our general conclusion was, despite our advanced years and intellect, a lot of so-called classics are pretty near unreadable. We had previously drawn this conclusion in high school. That’s not to say all classics are bad — we could reread Pride and Prejudice once a year, no problem. But only life threatening circumstances would ever force us to open Robinson Crusoe again. It’s nice that today’s students are being given modern choices. We promise their parents that pleasant reading material will not turn children into illiterate monsters.
