The idea is ridiculous.
Should all mortgage payers be surcharged to help those who live beyond their means and default on their payments?
Should all credit card users have to pay extra to bail out those who abuse credit?
Should all car drivers have to pay an extra tax to subsidise those who evade payment?
The truth of the matter is that the music business has brought its ills upon itself by its head-in-the-sand attitude.
I’m an author, and I expect books sooner or later to be subject to the same problems the music industry has; but the idea of increasing the price of books because people rip and download them, is just plain stupid. All that would happen is that all the money would go to big publishers while the smaller ones starved; just as all the money – if this ridiculous and unjust idea is adopted – will go to the big dumb rip-off record labels while the indies whistle in the wind.
