Leaving Austin In The Dim Morning Light

Our Austin journey, as all Austin journeys must, has come to an end. Only one more night of drinking and carousing (we, of course, always watch from sidelines or something like that) and then it’s back to the Center of the Universe and real life. We’re still writing up our thoughts on various sessions — most of the remaining items are more relevant to Medialoper, so look for them there. Remember: all you have to do is substitute the word “publishing” for any of the other media types listed.

We were very excited to meet the Pinky behind Pinky’s Paperhaus also known as Carolyn Kellogg of LAist. And to finally catch up with Ron Hogan of Beatrice and Matt Cheney of the Mumpsimus. And, of course, to bump into Kevin Smokler, who seems to know more about our secret life than we do. This whole “meeting people” thing seemed rather successful, so we’re thinking of leaving our cave again in May to attend BEA. We’ll also be at the RWA National Conference in July and the Yosemite Writer’s Conference in August. It’s like we’re a band.

Wow. You’re going to be gathering up those frequent flier miles!
    I’ll see you in July!

I hope you had a great time in Austin, and hope you got to have some Kirby Queso (not sure if I’m spelling Kirby right) and some – crap, I can’t remember the name of that awesome BBQ place outside of town – but I hope you got some. I went to Austin in March a couple of years ago to see NSYNC with my twin sister in concert for our birthday, and I thought the humidity at that time of year (this time of year?) was pretty neat. I hope it was good for you as well, and goddammit I missed Booksquare while I was on my little book tour the last couple of weeks. Had no reliable internet access on the road…

    Your fan and hopeful soon-to-be-contributor,

You’re going to be at BEA? Hurray! Join the litblog posse as they walk the floor. We did it last time and it was a hell of a lot of fun. You should have seen us at the Moleskine booth. 🙂

As I told Ed, the Moleskine booth may not withstand the Booksquare invasion. But as long as he’s willing to enjoy the mayhem.

Joan — welcome home. You’re worrying me with the “hopeful” — my blog is your blog or something like that. And we had barbecue at a place called Ruby’s. It was enough to make me want to stay forever. Except for the part that Texas isn’t in California.

Susan — I was recently reminded of our first meeting. How you rescued a terrified soul from the morass of loneliness. Or maybe it was just that you helped a really sarcastic person indulger her hobby.

Carolyn — Next time, I’m manning the camera.
