Cover for The Halo EffectLet us state for the record that we’d talk about M.J. Rose’s latest marketing idea even if $5 wasn’t being donated to Reading is Fundamental. But, boy, the second we heard the news, the little animated character from the RIF commercials of our childhood danced across our mind. Luckily, we pulled out of Memory Lane and have returned to the task at hand.

Rose has been turning notions of publishing and marketing books upside-down since she finished her first book Lip Service. Now she’s not only built a strong reader base, but her latest title, The Halo Effect (now out in paperback), was nominated for an Anthony Award. In her spare time, she maintains, oh, a few blogs, teaches courses on marketing books, mentors other writers, and gets the recommended eight hours of solid sleep per night.

What does this have to do with you? Well, a) new book out now; b) Rose is test driving the vidlit idea to help you make an informed decision about a new promotional venue; and, c) reading is fundamental — if 500 blogs writer about The Halo Effect, then a great cause gets $2,500.

In almost entirely unrelated news,

Early next week, the physical M.J. Rose will from now on be portrayed by an actress I have hired. She’s twenty years younger than me, works out at the gym 3.5 times more than I do, and loves the limelight. She’s had her teeth capped and her boobs lifted and she sleeps around with exactly the “right” men… men with influence… men who own media empires… what’s more she knows just when to whisper sweet nothings about getting reviews, please, in their ears.
