Uh, What Decade Is This?

Far be it for us to question the press, but have to wonder when the author of the article linked below last looked over the range of Harlequin titles. Because we’re fairly they stopped “tastefully” implying sex and started getting pretty detailed about the act a long time ago. Now if the scale was sliding from softcore (in a manner of speaking) to graphic, she’d have something.

Since we suspect we won’t have time to cover this story in any depth, we’ll just hit the highlights here: erotica is the new black and Harlequin is getting them some of that. Time will tell if women want plots with their sex, but we suspect this is a positive move (especially since lately it seems the Black Lace titles are only paying lip service to the concept of plot). This unabashed entrance of erotica into the mainstream may also have unexpected consequences: some people may discover that their grandmothers have dirty minds. We’re sorry if this is how you learn this news.

Romancing the Blog (which you like to) just posted a discussion about this. I think the title is along the lines of “who popped your cherry?” This trend, which seems to be titled “romantica” sparked a number of *ahem* enlightening comments on the above question.

I saw Laurie’s post (and, for those who care, I’m on next Friday under the, uh, more easily remember name). From an intellectual perspective, I’m fascinated by the dual rise of inspirational women’s fiction and erotica. A dear friend coordinated a writers contest where judges wanted to judge both categories. We both found this fascinating.

I think this is one of those topics that will truly be “aha” in a few months.
